| Earlier this month, we installed another bridge-mounted dry fire hydrant in Carroll County, Maryland. This marks our 26th dry fire hydrant installation in the county since this work began more than twenty years ago.
The hydrant was placed on the bridge over Bear Branch on Mayberry Road in Taneytown, Maryland. The installation used a 6-inch ETT Male DFH head, a 6-inch ETT stream strainer, and our angle-mount brackets. The lift was just under 10 feet, and the site provided adequate water to support a large flow. The installation replaced a fixed-DFH system that no longer worked.
During the flow test, a 1500 gpm pumper was used, producing a flow of 1,089 gallons per minute with the pumper’s pre-piped deck gun. It is believed the dry fire hydrant can flow in excess of 1,100 gallons per minute, but due to the traffic conditions during the test, only the deck gun was used. The goal was to achieve a minimum flow rate of 1,000 gallons per minute, which was successfully met.
This installation was funded by Carroll County as part of its rural fire protection water supply program. |
