Last weekend, folks from multiple departments in southern Onondaga county, NY got together to learn about moving big water on wheels. Students were exposed to new concepts such as drafting through multiple hard sleeves, utilizing all available room on a road by placing dump tanks in front of a pumper, and filling tankers via an open relay utilizing several different eductor style water movers...including an old navy dewatering pump. The seminar culminated on Sunday afternoon with a drill featuring 3 engines and 9 tankers on a 2-mile round trip. The units quickly got up to 750 gpm and then escalated to 1000 gpm during the last hour. Even though there were intermittent losses of water, everyone got a chance to practice their craft. Our thanks to the South Onondaga County Fire Department for hosting the class and to their neighbors from Otisco, Amber, Borodino, Nedrow, Navarino, Warners-Memphis, and Plainville for sending people and equipment to the class. Instructors for the weekend were Alan Butsch and Tim LeGore.
