Dry Hydrant Design #71 - Another Bridge Mount for Champlain, NY

After fighting off several months of snow and frigid temperatures we were able to complete our installation of a bridge-mount dry fire hydrant on Cardin Road in Champlain, NY. The Champlain Fire District and the Town of Champlain have done an excellent job of assessing their fire protection water supply needs....especially their drafting and dry fire hydrant locations. The Cardin Road dry fire hydrant installation was an important one for the community as the previous one (and the nearby bridge) were destroyed during a flooding event. With the installation of a new bridge came the need to restore dry fire hydrant capability in the area. The folks thought of us and our bridge-mount design and off we went to install one...once weather conditions improved.
On April 11th we completed the installation using our angle-mount design and ETT suction and strainer fittings. The design also used our Jericho Ice Breaker feature on the strainer assembly. The ice breaker feature is designed to help deploy the system in ice conditions up to 3-inches thick. The resultant flow test produced a flow in excess of 1000 gpm and everyone was pleased with the results. This was our second, bridge mount DFH system installed in Champlain, NY. Both were funded in a joint effort by the Town and the Fire District.
Elevation at the bridge was approximately 170-feet and lift was right around 12-feet.
Niagara Hose Engine 141 (2000 gpm) flow tests the new installation and produces a 1000+ gpm flow using the pre-piped deck gun.

One of the challenges of the design was that the pipe length needed to reach the river bed was longer than the bridge flow opening when the pipe was stowed.
