Dry Hydrant Repair & Maintenance #16 - Diver in the Water
By President Mark Davis
October 5, 2023
Much of our dry hydrant consulting work involves evaluation of dry fire hydrants that are not properly working. We often recommend the use of an underwater diver to evaluate the condition of the pipe and suction strainer. The photos provided by one of our website Members Lee Adams show exactly why. Drafting operations produced fish/debris at the pump intake. It could be a broken pipe; it could be a damaged suction strainer. It can only be confirmed by getting in the water and laying eyes on the strainer and pipe. The back-flush cover is missing on this strainer. The strainer needs repaired or replaced. Many thanks to Mr. Adams for sharing his photos and findings.
