Drafting Tip #03 - Dump Tank Operations - Keeping the Strainer Down

A problem that often arises when drafting from a portable dump tank while using a low-level strainer is the tendency for the strainer to want to flip or pick up off of the bottom of the tank. There are a few different methods that can be used to remedy this situation. During a water supply drill in Crossville, Alabama, we found an interesting approach. The folks there used a couple of weighted rings from traffic cones to hold down the suction strainer. The weights worked just great! They weigh about 7 lbs each and do a nice job of keeping the strainer from popping up. We just did not ask how the fellas acquired the weighted rings.
The 7-pound weights are easy to store.
The weights are also easy to deploy and inexpensive.
These traffic cone weights are used to keep the low level strainer from flipping over.
