Suction hose is a mainstay in rural pumping operations. We always like to recognize those folks who put thought and effort into carrying more suction hose than what is required in NFPA 1901. While delivering our rural water supply operations seminar in York County, Maine (September 2016) we came across Engine 2 from the Ross Corner Fire Company. The fire company protects a rural area of southern Maine and operates out of a very small station. Engine 2 is a 1,250 gpm engine/tanker that carries 1,800 gallons of water and long section of 6-inch suction hose with a pre connected floating barrel strainer. The unique design of the pumper allows it to fit in the small fire station. When it comes time to draft, two folks lower the suction hose and by making one connection...drafting can commence.
