Dump Site Operations #13 - Water Transfer Operations...Accessing Dump Tank Capacity
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By President Mark Davis
August 4, 2016

When transferring water from one dump tank to another, the goal is to access as much capacity in both dump tanks. For example, using a simple, two-dump tank operation with a 3,500-gallon primary tank and a 3,000-gallon peripheral tank...the goal of the operation is to be able to access and transfer as much of that 3,000 gallons of water as possible. The ability to transfer that water to the primary dump tank is affected by a number of variables such as the choice of transfer device, transfer distance, feeder hose selection, transfer device operating pressure, etc.

Some of our website members up in Onondaga County, New York recently held a water supply drill and were able to transfer an impressive amount of water from one dump tank into another. This is what we mean by being able to "access as much capacity as possible." Yes, we understand that as the water level gets lower in the dump tank and the transfer siphon becomes exposed that the transfer flow rate drops...however, this drill is a good example of just how powerful the venturi effect is in the fundamentals of hydraulics for fire protection. Many thanks to Harry Harty (Otisco FD) for sharing the story and photos with us.
