Here is another story from Stanley, Iowa where Chief Rodger Sill and the folks from the Stanley FD show how to use the "government" surplus program to benefit small town fire departments. Tanker 514 started off its life towing a dolphin transport trailer for the U.S. Navy. The Stanley FD acquired the 1991 Ford F900 semi-tractor through the Navy surplus vehicle program. The rig is powered by an 8.3L Ford diesel motor and an Allison transmission.

The 2,500 gal tank (HEMMT SS fuel tank) was acquired through the Army surplus program and the fire department outfitted the tank with a Stock Swivel dump on the rear, a Firemans Friend 4-inch valve with 4-inch male camlock also on the rear, and a 5-inch Storz side fill with a 4-inch camlock adaptor.

The tanker has a prototype check valve anti-surge overflow/vent on top and carries a 3,500gal Aluminum frame Type II SingleLane Foldatank with 6" Storz bottom connection. An 8-inch Kochek Holley transfer tube is carried on the read of the tanker. The Department is currently working to install an Army surplus, diesel-powered 125gpm portable pump, bumper spray bar, and forestry hose for use on field/grass fires.

While the tanker started its FD service as olive drab, it now sports a nice coat of Case IH tractor red!

This tanker is an example of "good ole" firehouse ingenuity.
