Part of a FD's water supply delivery program is the annual inspection and flow testing of dry fire hydrants. We recently had the opportunity to work with the folks at the Gamber Community VFC to replace the suction head on their 40,000-gallon underground fire protection water storage tank located on their property. The existing suction head had developed an air leak and the decision was made to just replace the entire head. In the process, the suction connection was be changed from a 4-1/2-inch NST male to a 6-inch NST male so that a "bell reducer" would no longer be needed when connecting to a pumper's 6-inch suction hose.

We thought that we would take the opportunty to share the steps in the process and provide some pointers regarding the removal of the old suction head and installaing the new one.
